My Sisters Engaged!

When Your Sister Gets Engaged on the Oregon Coast – A Photographer’s Perspective

Sometimes, life hands you opportunities that remind you why you’re passionate about what you do. My sister’s engagement was one of those moments—and not just any engagement, but one set against the stunning backdrop of the Oregon coast. This was the most important shoot I’ve ever done, and not just because I was behind the camera, but because I got to share this milestone with my sister and my soon-to-be brother-in-law. Here’s the story of that unforgettable day.

The Journey to the Coast

The day started early. We piled into my dad’s truck—all of us—for a road trip from Southern Oregon to the coast. My sister had no idea what was coming. She thought it was just a casual day trip. “It’s going to rain,” she kept saying. “We don’t have to go!” But we stuck to our story: “D has never been to the coast, and he’d love to see it!” For context, her fiancé is from Southern California, where they call it the beach. Here in Oregon, we say “coast” for a reason. It’s rugged, dramatic, and often rainy—but breathtakingly beautiful.

As we drove, my nerves kicked in. I knew what was about to happen, and the weight of capturing such an important moment was heavy. But more than anything, I couldn’t stop thanking God for the love these two share.

The Big Moment

After a two-hour drive, we arrived. The rain had let up, leaving a soft, hazy mist in the air—classic Oregon coast vibes. Within minutes of being there, my sister and D decided to take a walk on the sand. I followed, camera in hand as always, so she didn’t suspect a thing.

And then it happened. Less than two minutes into their walk, D dropped to one knee. My heart was pounding. “Don’t miss the shot,” I told myself, while also trying not to cry behind the lens. It was perfect. As he stood up, the rain stopped, and the sun peeked through the clouds just enough to cast a soft glow over them.

It was magical.

The Surprise That Followed

As we walked back up from the beach, the surprises weren’t over. Waiting for them were D’s parents, who had flown in from Orange County to celebrate. Cue more tears, more laughter, and an overwhelming sense of love.

The light in my sister’s eyes that day was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Capturing that emotion—the joy, the excitement, the love—is why I do what I do. This wasn’t just about the photos; it was about freezing a moment in time that they’ll treasure forever.

Why I Love What I Do

As a photographer, moments like this remind me of the privilege I have to document the milestones in people’s lives. My sister’s engagement is a story I’ll tell forever, not just because it was personal, but because it reinforced my passion for capturing life’s most beautiful emotions.
